How to Create and Upload Custom Covers for Your reMarkable Notebook

Your reMarkable 2 or reMarkable Paper Pro is a powerful tool for productivity, creativity, and organization. But did you know you can customize your notebooks with personalized covers? Adding your own covers makes it easier to organize your notes while also giving your notebooks a unique and stylish touch. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to create and upload custom covers to your reMarkable device. And if you’d rather skip the design work, we’ve got you covered with our ready-to-use Cover Page Pack!

Step 1: Design Your Custom Cover

Before uploading a cover, you’ll need to create your design. Here’s what to keep in mind:

Design Tips for a Perfect Cover:

✅ Size it Correctly – The reMarkable 2 and Paper Pro have a screen resolution of 1872 × 1404 pixels (paper pro is more but it’s the same ratio). For the best results, design your cover at this exact size.
✅ Use a Simple, Clean Layout – Since the reMarkable 2 has a black-and-white e-ink display, avoid designs with too many fine details or light gray tones, if designing for it. High-contrast images work best.
✅ Leave Space for a Title – If you plan to title your notebook, leave a blank space in your design where you can write or trace a title later.
✅ Save as a PDF – The easiest way to upload your cover is to save it as a single-page PDF file. You can create your design in Canva, Photoshop, Affinity Designer, or any other graphic software that allows exporting to PDF (even apple pages or google docs will work).

Step 2: Uploading Your Custom Cover to reMarkable

Once your cover design is ready, you’ll need to upload it to your device. Here’s how:

Option 1: Upload via reMarkable App

  1. Open the reMarkable desktop app on your computer.
  2. Click the “Upload” button and select your custom cover PDF.
  3. The file will sync automatically to your reMarkable device.

Option 2: Upload via USB (for direct transfer)

  1. Connect your reMarkable to your computer via USB-C cable.
  2. Open your device’s storage and copy your PDF cover to the Notebooks folder.
  3. Safely eject your device, and your cover will appear in your reMarkable library.

Step 3: Setting Up Your Cover as a Notebook

Since reMarkable notebooks don’t allow native cover pages, you can use this simple workaround:

  1. Open your PDF cover on your reMarkable device.
  2. Add new pages to the same file, just like you would when creating a notebook.
  3. In the PDF settings, select show the first page not the last page used.
  4. Each time you open your notebook, the cover will be the first page you see!

For extra customization, you can use layers to write your notebook title on the cover, add hand-drawn elements, or even copy and paste traceable fonts for a polished look.

Want Pre-Made Covers? We’ve Got You Covered!

If you love the idea of custom covers but don’t want to design your own, check out our Cover Page Pack! It includes:

✅ 11 professionally designed cover templates
✅ A bonus traceable fonts PDF so you can easily personalize each cover with a stylish title
✅ Step-by-step instructions to help you set up your covers effortlessly

Final Thoughts

Personalizing your reMarkable with a custom cover is a great way to organize your notebooks, make them visually appealing, and add a personal touch to your digital workspace. Whether you create your own or use our Cover Page Pack, a well-designed cover makes it easier to find the right notebook and makes your reMarkable feel more like your space.

The Remarkable 2 is such a great device. Distraction free, paper like, great for deep thinking and a creative outlet. But it can also be fun to play some simple games on the remarkable 2 as well. We’ve put a little list together of 11 fun games you can play on your eink device.
And most you don’t need to buy or download anything.

1. Noughts and Crosses (Tic-Tac-Toe)

Any game you can play on paper, you can of course, play on your reMarkable2.
Noughts and crosses is a fun, simple game to play on the remarkable 2, especially for the kids.
You can easily make your own template to play this game. Just draw up the lines and then add a layer. On this new layer place your zeros and x’s. When the game is finished erase all, from the sidebar. The layer that you created the lines on will remain but the zeros and crosses will be gone.

We do have a fun PDF template of 9, 2 person games you can play, if you want to download that. It has a noughts and crosses template as one of the games.

2. Sudoku

The classic game of sudoku will give you hours of fun and brain training. There’s 9 smaller squares with 9 tiny squares in each, 9 columns and 9 rows. You need to put only once all the numbers 1-9 in each smaller square of 9, each column and each row. Simple but sometimes very very hard. You will have to download these of course. There’s 1000’s out there. We have some if you want here with navigation links and here, easy to very hard.

3. Connect 4

Like noughts and crosses just make up some grids and x’s and o’s instead of the colour circles you would play with the real connect 4. Just remember that gravity counts with this one. I used to play this at maths at school (instead of doing maths). I was great at it and undefeated until my now wife beat me back then – I think I was distracted.

4. Crosswords

I think this one goes without too much explanation. Of course you need to download some from somewhere. You can even take a picture of the newspaper with your phone and then upload that with your remarkable app on your phone. We have 20 easy ones here for free. We are planning on adding more, but they take along time to make up.

5. Hangman

Classic games of trying to work out the word before it’s too late. You can probably make a more kid friendly version of it with a bit of creativity.

6. Chess or Checkers

This is probably not a game you thought you could play on your paper like device, but we worked out a way.
You do have to do a little preparation by tracing the pieces, but once you have done that one time, you are always good to go.
You simply use the select tool, to select the piece you want to move and drag it to wherever you want (within the rules of chess, of course).

We have a template that we made, perfectly formatted for the remarkable 2 for you to play chess if you like.
Just download the template, trace each pieces once, then copy and paste. You only need to trace one pawn and then you paste it multiple times for example.
When the game is finished, use the undo function to quickly bring all the pieces back to their starting position. Zoom in when tracing to get more accuracy.

This picture, I literally emailed to myself from my remarkable 2 at the beginning of a game.

7. Dots and Boxes

You just need a dot template for this one. I find the official remarkable 2 dot template a little light, so you may want to find something else. This is one of our 2 player games if you are downloading that, but really all you need is a bunch of dots. A grid template would probably work too.

Btw, if you are looking for a good dot template for a bullet journal (bujo) we have made one that works perfect for that, with navigation links to the index and any page.

Dots and Boxes is a two player game. Here’s the instructions, it’s pretty easy once you get it.
Objective: To complete as many boxes as possible. Number of players: 2 or more
Instructions:
1.Players take turns drawing a line between two adjacent dots.
2.Whenever a player completes a box by connecting the four dots around it, they put their initial inside the box and get another turn.
3.The game continues until all the boxes have been completed.
4.The player with the most completed boxes at the end of the game wins.

8. Battleship

You would need two remarkables for this game. Or at least another person with the printed game layout. You play it just like the boardgame. Feel free to download this image and use that. Full credit to Madison’s Paper Templates for this image.

9. Wordoku

Just like Sudoku but with letters. Usually those letters make up a word, but not always. The trick is that they have to be 9 separate letters making up the word. No double up of letters or it wrecks that game. It took us quite a while to come up with 84 words for our wordoku puzzle book.

wordoku cover for remarkable 2

10. Pictionary

Just like the game you would play on paper or a whiteboard. Don’t forget you can project your remarkable 2 to a computer, using the app and screenshare, so you could even put it on a big screen (connected to your pc) and play pictionary with your friends and family. I talk about the remarkable 2’s ability to screen share here.

11. Paper Soccer

A two player game where you try and score a goal by taking turns to draw lines while avoiding obstacles and barriers.
Here’s the instructions from our two player game book.
Instructions:
1.Players take turns moving the ball along the field by drawing lines (from dot to dot) to represent the path of the ball.
2.The ball can only move forward and cannot be moved back (another words, it cannot go over an existing line).
3.The ball can ‘bounce’ off another end point of a line or side line.
4.The first player to score a goal by getting the ball into the opposing goal wins the game.

Have fun playing some of these games on your remarkable 2.
Would love to hear some fun and interesting ways you have used your device to play games.

When you think of games on the reMarkable 2, you can easily think of games that you could play with pen and paper. You wouldn’t think of playing checkers or chess! Yet we have worked out a way, to be able to play chess on the reMarkable 2!

We worked out that if we utilise the ‘selection’ tool of the reMarkable 2, we could grab a chess piece and move it around the board.
You do have to trace the pieces first and copy and paste them (for the pieces that are multiples. ie: you only need to trace one pawn!).

A quick tip, is to zoom in, when tracing to get a better looking piece.

Our template is perfectly formatted for your reMarkable 2 and the pieces are easy to trace for both the white and black team.
The PDF template includes the pieces to trace and 2 blank chess boards to set up your chess pieces and checkers.

You can download Chess for the reMarkable 2 here.

Creating a Bullet Journal, also known as a Bujo, on the Remarkable 2 can be rewarding, relaxing, productive and simple.

What is a Bullet Journal

The bullet journal system was created by Ryder Carroll, a software designer, who wanted an analogue (think old school paper) way of organising his life.
It is brilliant in it’s simplicity and flexibility.  You can grab a hard copy bullet journal from amazon here instead if that works better for you.

The bullet journal method is a way to record or log what’s happened, or thoughts, or note upcoming events and action items.
In reality, with a few cornerstone ideas you can make your bullet journal anything you want it to be.
A quick youtube of ‘bullet journal’ or ‘bujo’ and you will see what some people have come up with. Some are artistic on another level, though this is not by any means necessary.

You can buy a bullet journal (hard copy) direct from the creator or grab a dot journal diary or even just use a blank notebook.

The brilliance is in the index and future log.
Instead of mapping out 12 months, like a planner would do, you have an index that you fill out as you go (so quick navigation) and you use a future log (yearly and monthly) to note things that will come up, when you get to that month.

Then the system of a ‘key’ helps you to make the bullet journal functional. You can use > for pushing something forward or a cross for task done or whatever you like.
I highly recommend watching Ryder’s videos on how he does it. After all, he came up with the idea and has been perfecting it (at least what works for him).
I use a dot for a task, a line for an event, an arrow forward or back if I need to take further action and a tick for done among others.

Bullet Journal v Digital

Digital is great. You can set reminders or plan something for 5 months out. There are endless apps to journal or note to do items. Many sync up from one device to another. I use google calendar for my mowing business. It just doesn’t work using a paper planner or bullet journal for 70+ lawns (though I did start with a bujo).

On the other hand, digital can be distracting and hard to do deep thinking. Physically writing can be calming and even help you to remember/internalise what you are writing. With paper you think clearly, don’t get distracted and keep on task.

The problem with paper, is that you have to carry it around with you and if you make a mistake you can’t easily fix it (well you can just cross it out). If you have multiple bullet journals, do you bring them all with you or just your latest one.

Here’s where the Remarkable 2 brings the best of both together.

Bullet Journalling on the Remarkable 2

The Remarkable 2 can’t sync with other apps, or send you a reminder 15 minutes before the meeting, but it does solve two of the main problems with having a paper bullet journal.
The Remarkable 2 has all your notes, files and PDFs with you, so you most likely are going to bring it with you anyway. And it means you are not carrying something extra around with you. It’s just another file (notebook) on your device.
Add to that the ability to erase, select and copy and paste, means you can be free to write, draw, think deeply and still move your ‘heading’ around if you didn’t center it properly or delete with the eraser or even use the double tap option to undo.

The problem with the Remarkable 2 as a bullet journal however, is the inability to quickly navigate through your notebook when it gets large (think 50-100 pages or more). Though the swipe up from the bottom feature does help.
Also a small problem for me was the lightness (visibility) of the dot template built into the reMarkable 2.

That’s why I made the Dot Journal Template for the reMarkable 2.

Remarkable 2 Dot Journal Template

The solution for me, was to create a PDF template that had the right amount of dots, that were easy to see and create a way to quickly navigate the template.
So to quickly navigate I added a light and unobtrusive link to the ‘index’ page and a page that links to any page, just by tapping on the number.

My process is to log where things are located in the index, jump to the page-navigation page and quickly jump to the page that I’m after. Then if I need, I jump back to the index page or page-navigation page.

That means within just two taps, I can go from anywhere in the journal to anywhere else.

For me, this makes the bullet journal system even better.

It still feels analogue. I’m still writing and doing deep thinking. I’m still able to be flexible in how I do things. I’m not distracted like I am with my PC or Phone.
And now I don’t need to put up with messy pages or take forever to find things.

If you want to try out bullet journaling for yourself on the reMarkable 2, you can download our template here. We have a dark mode option and the normal white background option. Try it out for a couple of weeks and if you don’t like the template, I’ll refund the few dollars it costs.
